The Can I Use Amazon Fire Stick on Chromebook?
The Firestick is primarily designed to serve Amazon content, although it also supports content from other streaming services. The device itself was envisioned as an addition to smart TVs, allowing users to access HD quality video content, apps, and more.
However, with a growing number of people using their Chromebooks and laptops as part-time TVs, a legitimate question arises: How do I use my Firestick on Chromebook? The answer, however, is not so optimistic.
Can it be done?
The question of whether you can use the Firestick on the Chromebook is probably not the right one. But let’s not hide the answer under piles of words.
Most likely, you won’t be able to pair your Firestick with your Chromebook. On the one hand, Chromebooks come with micro HDMI ports (exactly for the purpose of connecting to smart TVs and computer monitors).
That being said, even if you find a workaround, there’s a good chance it won’t work. Firesticks are simply designed to be paired with TVs, monitors, and projectors. The mere fact that a Firestick comes with its own operating system should be a telltale sign that the device was not intended to work with laptops.
However, the real question is: is it necessary to pair the two? Even if there was a way to use the Firestick on a Chromebook, why would anyone want to do it? Well you might say, because I want to put the handy little Firestick in my pocket, hit the road, and enjoy my favorite program on my trusty Chromebook on the go.
Well no. As long as you have a Chromebook with a browser installed and an internet connection, you don’t need a Firestick for streaming. For one thing, Chromebooks can both connect to the internet and stream video content, so there’s no need to pair it with a Firestick.
In fact, the very reason the Firestick exists in the first place is that you can’t just open a web browser and log into your Prime account on your smart TV, without compromising on video and sound quality, FPS, and a variety of other aspects and parameters.
On the other hand, you don’t have to worry about this if you have a Chromebook. Open the browser, sign in to your Amazon Prime account, and just start streaming.
But just for the sake of the conversation; could this be done?
Firestick and a laptop
Again, most likely, no, it cannot be done. There are, however, a few tricks that may work. However, none of this falls under warranty and you may be wasting your time, money and energy. But, anyway, it’s gone.
Option 1
The first solution would be to adapt the HDMI connector of the Firestick to your laptop. If you are wondering why such a port exists, if not to connect your laptop to the Firestick, the answer is simple: many people want to connect their gaming consoles to their laptop via a USB cable. But most gaming consoles, unlike the Firestick, were designed with this in mind.
Either way, to do this you will need to use an instant broadcast box. “So,” you might say, “can you use the Firestick on the Chromebook after all?”
Well, not exactly. For this solution to work, you need at least an equivalent of a MacBook Sierra or Windows 10 64-bit PC. You will therefore need an i5-4xxx quad-core processor, a GeForce GTX 600 GPU (equivalent or better) and a USB 3.0 port. But, and that’s not all.
The Firestick’s HDMI signal uses HDCP. Simply put, HDCP is an encryption protocol. Basically, it’s an anti-piracy tool. Most instant streaming boxes do not work with HDCP. So to make things even more complicated, you will also need an HDMI splitter. Oh, but not all HDMI splitters can ‘break’ the HDCP protocol, so you’ll have to go through a potentially lengthy and expensive trial and error process.
Even if you find an ideal instant broadcast box, even if you get your hands on an HDMI splitter capable of breaking the HDCP protocol, there is no guarantee that it will work. Of course, that can work, as long as your Chromebook meets the specifications mentioned above.
Option 2
Okay, that option isn’t ideal either. In fact, it could be even worse than the previous one. So, you probably know what an HDMI port is, right? But have you heard of HDMI input and output ports? Maybe not, but you know what it is.
For example, your laptop probably has an HDMI out port. This means that if you want, for example, to cast its screen to your TV, you will use your laptop’s HDMI output port to connect it to the TV.
On the other hand, your TV has the HDMI input port. However, believe it or not, there are laptops that have HDMI ports. And yes, if you find one, the Firestick could work well on it. Keep in mind, however, that laptops with HDMI input ports are very, very rare.
So, can it be done after all?
Well, yes, provided you find a game-level Chromebook or one with an HDMI input port. And it is very unlikely that you will find it either. But who knows? If you’re dedicated to connecting your Firestick to Chromebook, there might be a way.
