Horrors of a “hillbilly” incest family where dad allowed adults to rape children in exchange for beer and cigarettes

A DAD who ran an incest clan allowed family members to have sex with his children in exchange for beer or cigarettes.

William Goler and his family have been described as a “hillbilly sex ring,” and when authorities began digging into their past, it turned out that incest had been a way of life for over 100 years.

Thirteen adults from the notorious clan have been jailed after being found guilty of 100 incest and other sex offenses involving children between the ages of six and 14.

William, his partner Wanda Wiston and his brother Tom were among those convicted along with other male and female family members.

Living in a remote mountain community in rural Canada, far from prying eyes, they created a twisted way of life where girls gave birth to their siblings’ babies.

Twenty people were crammed into the house—aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews and brothers and sisters.

Their story mirrors that of the Colts – billed as the most inbred family in the world – in which patriarch Tim Colt runs an “incest” farm in Australia, where he uses his sons to rape his daughters and father their children.

The Goler clan’s dirty secret was revealed when one of William’s children sobbed up to one of her teachers and described what had happened to her in 1984.

The 14-year-old said she had been treated like her father’s wife and had been raped by him up to 14 times a month since she was nine and trying to get her pregnant.

Her teachers contacted the police and they began questioning the children, who slowly opened up after being persuaded by officers.

Two years later, the case finally made it to court, where Sandra’s 11-year-old sister, Donna, made a harrowing statement about what had happened.

“The first time I can remember was when I was five, just six because I had just graduated from kindergarten and was in first grade,” she said.

“I came home and that was the first time I was raped, and it was by my father.

EMPLOYED TO BE MANAGED

“If someone wanted to have sex with one of their children, they would leave it for a case of beer or a carton of cigarettes or even a pack of cigarettes.

“They have to choose which child they want to have sex with.

“We had nothing to say, we couldn’t prevent it, we couldn’t stop them.

“We basically stood against the wall and they chose which ones they wanted and we were forced into it.”

She disgustedly said that “some kids were even forced to watch when someone was having sex.”

The prosecutor described the case as “something out of the movie Deliverance” – which is known to depict breeding in America’s deep south.

Decades of inbreeding had taken their toll on the family and their defense attorney, Bob Levy, told Canadian television the family was “on another planet” and “borderline retarded”.

Their intelligence is among the “bottom one or two percent” of society, he said.

They had no idea what happened to them at their trial and one of the defendants had no idea what the word incest meant.

A CENTURY OF INCEST

The court was told that all of the accused had themselves been sexually abused as children.

But that’s not all, and incredibly, it turns out that incest has been a way of life for generations, as witnessed by Acadia University sociologist Jim Sacouman.

“There is census material that makes it very clear that breeding and incest occurred in the Goler family in the 1860s and 1870s,” he later said.

William Goler was sentenced to seven years in prison for incest, gross indecency and buggery.

His partner Wanda Wiston was sentenced to four years in prison for sexually assaulting eight children.

His son Tom was sentenced to three years in prison for cheating with a nephew and niece and his former brother-in-law, Roy Hills, and one year for cheating with a seven-year-old girl.

Another family member, Charlie Goler Jr., was sentenced to two years in prison for having sex with an underage cousin.

Cranswick Goler received six years and nine months for cheating with a 12-year-old male cousin and his sisters Josie and Mary, 12 months for sexual assault.

Lawrence Johnstone two and a half years for misleading with a niece.

The family’s 12 children were sent to families for adoption to start new lives with new identities and were reportedly making good progress.

Donna continued to campaign for the rights of abused children and for a change in the law so the young relatives of pedophiles can never be left alone with them.

“They can’t babysit their niece, they can’t babysit their cousin or their own child,” she told CBC.

“You must not be alone with a child under the age of 14 at all, unsupervised.”
