Stanford Soccer Player Death: Everything We Know So Far About Katie Mayer’s Cause Of Death?

The 22 years old Katie Mayer was found dead in an on campus residence on Wednesday. This news was confirmed by the University. The cause of death of rising soccer star Katie Mayer has been confirmed by the Country of Santa Clara Medical Examiner Coroner.

“There is no indication of foul play, and Meyer’s death was determined to be self-inflicted,” the County of Santa Clara, Calif., said in a statement provided to PEOPLE Thursday.

“We are exceedingly saddened to hear about the death of Katie Meyer, a beloved, talented and respected Stanford student, athlete and Santa Clara County resident,” the statement continued.

“The Medical Examiner-Coroner extends sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Katie Meyer.”

Katie Mayer the goalkeeper and captain of the Stanford women’s soccer team was only 22 years old. Sheriff Laura Smith said in a news release provided to People that –

“On 03/01/2022 at approximately 11:33am, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a dormitory on Stanford University’s Campus for a report of a death investigation,”

“Upon arrival, deputies met with Stanford Department of Public Safety and the Palo Alto Fire Department, who were already on scene. The Palo Alto Fire Department advised deputies that they located one unresponsive female student inside of the dormitory,” the news release continued. “At approximately 10:45am, Palo Alto Fire Department pronounced the person deceased.”

Tribute to Katie Meyer by Teammates –

“Katie was extraordinarily committed to everything and everyone in her world,” Stanford Vice Provost for Student Affairs Susie Brubaker-Cole said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Her friends describe her as a larger-than-life team player in all her pursuits, from choosing an academic discipline she said ‘changed my perspective on the world and the very important challenges that we need to work together to overcome’ to the passion she brought to the Cardinal women’s soccer program and to women’s sports in general,” the statement continued.

Prior to this, Mayer has made headlines when she made two key saves in a penalty shots against North Carolina to help Stanford win the national championship in 2019.

“Katie was a bright shining light for so many on the field and in our community,” Brubaker-Cole said.

Athletic director of Stanford Bernard Muir also shared his condolences.

“There are no words to express the deep sadness we feel about Katie Meyer’s passing,” he said. “Katie was an outstanding student-athlete and a beloved, passionate leader here at Stanford. Our entire athletics community is heartbroken and Katie will be deeply missed.”

The U.S. Soccer FederationThe NCAA and Katie’s teammates at Stanford also shared tributes to the late athlete Katie Mayer which as follows –

“I am heartbroken. I had the honor to play alongside Katie for a season and she inspired not only me but everyone else around her,” former teammate Lauren Sesselmann shared on Twitter. “Your amazing heart & smile will be missed.”

“Traveling during Fall Season can be stressful because I miss classes. But my professors have been so accommodating and understanding… my teammates and I try to pay them back by getting big wins for the Farm,” she wrote.

Brubaker-Cole encouraged the students to take care of themselves and each other amid the tragedy.

What is the Cause of Death of Stanford Soccer Player?

Her mother Gina Mayer said the cause of death of Katie Mayer is suicide in an interview. She also said that there are no red flags before her death. Her statement in an interview is as follows –

“She died by suicide,’ Gina Meyer said in an interview on NBC’s Today show. ‘The last couple days are like a parent’s worst nightmare and you don’t wake up from it. So it’s just horrific.”

“I don’t even think it’s hit us yet. We’re still in shock. But we had no red flags,’ she added.

Katie Mayer, 22, was found dead in her dorm room on Tuesday; just months shy of her graduation.

The parents of Stanford soccer player revealed the cause of death and it was that Katie was facing potential disciplinary action from the university before she attempt suicide. They also said that this incident might contributed to her tragic death.

Katie’s Father Steven Meyer Said That –

‘Katie, being Katie, was defending a teammate on campus over an incident. And the repercussions of her defending that teammate (were possibly resulting in disciplinary action,’

In their research to find answer for Katie’s death. Her parents think Katie may have received an email regarding disciplinary actions being taken against before she take her life.

“We have not seen that email yet,’ her mother said. ‘She had been getting letters for a couple of months. This letter was kind of the final letter that there was going to be a trial or some kind of something. This is the only thing that we can come up with that triggered something.”

At the time of interview her parents also questioned that the pressure of being a collegiate athlete and captain of the soccer team were much more for their beloved daughter?

“There is anxiety and there is stress to be perfect, to be the best, to be No. 1.’ Gina Meyer said of her daughter, who had helped Stanford win the 2019 NCAA women’s soccer championship.”

“She was excited,’ Gina said. ‘Katie had a lot on her plate. She had a lot going on. But she was happy. She was in great spirits.”

“We’re just struggling right now,’ Gina told to reporter. ‘We are struggling to know what happened, and why it happened. We’re just heartbroken. So heartbroken.”
